01 Affordable Housing Project

TYPE: RESIDENTIAL_MIXED USE
COLLABORATORS
Ian Watson, Dorian McCall, Tim Matousek
Relate to Context
Bridge the gap between densification of the site and maintaining the general character of the neighborhood
Dignified Living Spaces
Generate comfortable housing, with unique
characteristics suited for a wide range of inhabitants ranging from families to seniors
Pocket Neighborhoods
Stitch together connections between private,
semiprivate, & public spaces to foster distinct
atmospheres throughout the entire site

DOMESTICITY_

Ques from neighboring housing are utilized
in the form of gables in addition to relationally
proportional elements such as windows &
entrances

CONSCIENTIOUS HEIGHT_

All townhomes situated along streets maintain
a maximum 2 storey height, assisting in
the concealment of the more centrally located
higher density units

Bedrooms alternate between different townhome types providing unique settings for its inhabitants by implementing juliet balconies, decks, or reading nooks

APARTMENT TYPOLOGY_

Portland’s need for housing requires a higher
density typology than townhomes, thus larger
scale apartments are implemented throughout
the site

DENSITY WITHOUT SECLUSION_

The open corridors, porous on one side and
flanked by units on the other, bleed into units’
enlarged alcoves (a small scale pocket) providing
semi-private space not often found in
this typology

Each apartment contains it’s own community room that opens to a roof deck for larger planned gatherings

DEFINED OPENNESS_

Scattered throughout the site, in between
buildings and paths are unique pockets, each
with its own allure, with an intention to stimulate
a particular activity

FOR ALL_

Whether the resident be young or old and
the activity be exercise or meditative, each
pocket acts as an extension of one’s own
living space, providing a degree of ownership
over one’s surroundings

Ideally, each pocket will attract different sets of residents each day with the hope that random

moments of conversation occurs, knitting the community together organically

MEANDERING_

The walkways bleed into different parts of the
site, connecting & differentiating between
unique neighborhoods throughout

WAYFINDING_

Pathing throughout the site undulate in widths
differentiating between main thoroughfares
and narrower aisles. As paths lead to different
areas, the ground scape changes as well
